Guidebooks can be very handy and this Lonely Planet is among the best. But I often prefer to travel without them. Asking fellow travelers about where they have been and stayed can be very rewarding, and I have found many great places that were not in Lonely Planet. I have met a few Lonely Planet authors while traveling, and their very tight budgets do not allow them the time for thorough research. If it's your first trip to Chile, I advise buying this book as a general guide, but keep your eyes and ears open for other alternatives, and ignore the bus schedules.

The Rough Guide to Chile

I've been a huge fan of Rough Guides and have used them extensively over the past 15 years or so while traveling to various countries. The Rough Guide to Chile 3 was a relative disappointment. Information is buried in text and hard to parse. I found the Fodor's to be much, much more useful to the extent that we just stopped looking at the Rough Guide at all after a few days. If you just want to glance at cities as you tour them and look for specific things to do (eat, stay, shop, etc.) this really isn't the book for you.

Trekking in the Patagonian Andes

I used the 1998 edition for a three month trip in 2005. I went on long treks near Ushuaia, PN Los Glaciares near El Calafate, PN Torres del Paine, PN Nahuel Huapi near Bariloche, PN Chiloe, and PN Villarica.
Sometimes I found it difficult to interpret the directions until after the fact, however, the information was almost always correct. Not bad considering that the book was already several years old.
Planning out several months of travelling in advance and buying maps in Santiago and Buenoes Aires is impractical.

Fodor's Argentina, 6th Edition: with Wine Country and Chilean Patagonia

I found that the Frommers Argentina had the best practical information. However, I like this book as a complement because it lists different hotels, restaurants and tour companies so that I feel like I have multiple options to evaluate and choose from. The pictures in this book are also amazing.
